Yesterday I had to fire one of my temp workers. Some background info. I am working on this huge Geophysics project in California to study the
strength of the levees. We have two
separate crews working
simultaneously and each crew has three people (one person to run the equipment and two laborers to pound electrodes in the ground, hook up cables). So the company that I work for has a construction division here in Sacramento and each crew has someone from that department and a temp worker doing labor on their crew. To make a long story short, my
temp worker sucked. He was a really nice guy and
really meant well but I just
don't think that he was able to keep up with the pace of the work and he was a bit lazy. However this job was amazing for this guy, its a state job and it pays 'prevailing wage' which is something like 35$ per hour (for them not for me)
because the state has something worked out with labor unions or something like that. So this guy was excited to be working here. He would say things to me like "everyday you have me on this job boss is a blessing for me" (which is weird
because he is like 30 years my senior and making more money). Now the decision to fire him was not mine alone. Everyone who worked on this project when I was at home said the same thing, 'we gotta get this guy out'. Anyhow it turns out that their where other labor people in my company that had no billable work and wanted to get on this project. One of my boss's asked if I thought they would do better work and I
answered honestly 'yes'. He told me to let him go....
So at the end of the day on our ride home from the levees I had to tell him that he was done. I kinda thought he would be expecting it, but he was not. I felt pretty bad and he
layed on the guilt pretty thick. He said things like " I hope that the temp agency can find me a desk job in time for the holidays for like 10$/hr" or "looks like well have no Christmas this year". Or perhaps when he called his wife when I was in the car and said "he got let go and
don't worry well make it through some how", Ouch!!!
Not a fun experiance.
